Located in the west bay of Doha, the General Post Office building, is still marvelled as one of the best architectural showpieces of modem Qatar. The intricate design of interiors called for a high degree of skill and expertise as each floor was different with its own distinctive layout. This 30m high R.C.C. structure is founded on bored R.C.C. piles, with a waffle flat slab construction. In order to provide natural light to the main public hall and second floor, a series of precast concrete barrel vault type roofing units were incorporated. Fluted ribbed concrete blocks were used in wall construction with marble flooring as per Islamic designs. The scope of work also included central air-conditioning, electrical works, electronic post boxes, and postal mechanisation equipment, roads and landscaping alongwith a four storied attached car park for 600 vehicles.
