Extremely remote, high mountain site
Controlled blasting to 'trim' canal
Concrete aggregate and sand crushed and washed on-site
Innovative, coagulant water clarification
Major reconstruction of existing unlined canal at an elevation of 10,500 feet (3,200 m); included blasting enlargement in rock; on-site aggregate crushing, washing and concrete production to complete a 5,000footlong (1,500 m) rectangular cross-section. Work included four avalanche cover sections and two overflow spillways. Substantial completion occurred in one four-month construction season, attributable to the negotiated, 'quasi' design/build format, and notable construction intensity.
Type of Project: Concrete canal lining and erosion repair
Structural Concrete: 5,000 cy; 3,800 m3
