Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHEP) is considered to be the largest hydroelectric project in India once completed, with a capacity of 2000 MW.
The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project is the second largest hydroelectric project undertaken in India to date. It is a run-of-river scheme with a small pondage on the Subansiri River. Located near North Lakhimpur, on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the project is strategically positioned with the nearest railhead at Nagaon and the nearest airports at Lilabari and Dibrugarh.
The project is expected to generate an estimated annual energy output of 7421.59 MU in a 90% dependable year.
The Subansiri Lower Project, with a capacity of 2000 MW, spans the Dhemaji and Kamle (formerly Lower Subansiri) districts in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively. The dam's left bank is situated in Assam, while the right bank, along with the power house, headrace tunnels, and surge tunnels, is located in Arunachal Pradesh.
The project includes the construction of several key elements, such as the intake structure, eight headrace tunnels, eight surge tunnels, eight vertical pressure shafts, the powerhouse, and the tailrace channel.
At its peak, the project employed nearly 3,800 people, including both company staff and PRW (piece rate workers), highlighting its significant scale and impact on local employment.
